Monitor saves child from choking

Sharon Corman has reported to work in the cafeteria at Garth Elementary School for the last five years. The lunch monitor enjoys her job and being with the children she serves each day. She hoped she would never have to put her past experience into practice at the school but was thankful for it when she saved a second grade boy who was choking on his lunch recently.
Jordan Collins said a piece of chicken got stuck in his throat but Ms. Sharon made him all better. Corman performed the Heimlich maneuver learned as part of her first aid and CPR training, training received during her work as a cardiovascular technician at St. Joseph Hospital. Corman still keeps her certification current.
“Children are precious,” Corman stated. “If they can’t depend on us, who can they depend on?”
Scott County Schools and Garth Elementary are thankful for dedicated employees like Sharon Corman who go the extra mile to take care of students.
Keri Keyse, Nutrition Manager at Garth, works closely with Corman. “Sharon is the best of the best. She goes above and beyond each day to take care of her babies. Our students love Ms. Sharon and she loves them,” Keyse commented.
Superintendent Dr. Kevin Hub surprised Corman recently with a Scott County Schools medallion of excellence in honor of her heroic actions and quick thinking.
