KSBA Board of Directors quarterly meeting includes legislative review, update on strategic planning for services
Leaders of the Kentucky School Boards Association talked about legislation, services and ways to enhance the work of the association’s 27-member board of directors April 21-22 in Louisville during the board’s quarterly meeting and annual planning retreat.
Among those with new leadership roles starting at the meeting were KSBA President David Webster of Simpson County and President elect Ronnie Holmes of Graves County. Allen Kennedy of Hancock County is now in the position of immediate past president. The meeting included orientation and participation by recently elected/appointed members of the KSBA board: Steve Becker of Danville Independent, Gene Allen of East Bernstadt Independent, Tony Kuklinski of Elizabethtown Independent, Pamela Morehead-Johnson of Eminence Independent, Bill Robertson of Fulton Independent, Diane Berry of Nelson County, Mona Vice of Nicholas County and Davonna Page of Russellville Independent.
Much of the opening Friday afternoon time was spent on board members providing ideas – via a story board approach – in four areas:
• plans for the association’s fall regional meetings, including options such as timing, formats and presentation subjects.
• creation of new training for veteran school board members, beyond the basic and state-mandated topics.
• ways to enhance the efficient functions of the KSBA board from new member training to increasing connections between the board and its statewide membership.
• potential changes in the structure of the board’s operating committees assigned to such areas as the budget, services to members and partnerships with other education groups.
Executive Director Mike Armstrong, Associate Executive Director Kerri Schelling, other staff and the officers will craft a set of recommendations for the board’s consideration at its next meeting in June.
The formal Saturday meeting of the board included a review of important K-12 laws passed by the legislature from Governmental Relations Director Eric Kennedy; the quarterly report on the association’s financial reports by Chief Financial Officer Steve Smith; and discussion on a FY 2017-18 update for the association’s strategic plan for continuous improvement of services to members.
“The members of the KSBA Board of Directors, through these quarterly meetings, serve as the immediate eyes and ears of our members,” Armstrong said. “They likewise serve a vital role in helping the KSBA staff stay sensitive to the immediate issues and concerns our board members are dealing with all across the Commonwealth. “
The final KSBA board meeting of the FY 2016-17 school year will be June 24 in Frankfort.
