KSBA continues to provide regional opportunities for school board members needing to get their 2016 state-mandated training hours in the areas of finance, superintendent evaluations and ethics. The sessions are being hosted by the state's regional education cooperatives.
Five sessions are scheduled during April: Ashland, April 14 (KEDC); Corbin, April 15 (SESC); Eddyville, April 21 (WKEC); and Lexington, April 23 (CKEC). Each session will include three hours of training with an hour devoted to each of the mandated training areas.
Depending on the location of the training, courses offered this year include:
Capital Funding: Capital funds are the source of protected monies to support the renovation and construction of school facilities. These sessions cover how these funds are generated, their restrictions, their bonding capacity, and bonding issuance. The capital funds request form also will be reviewed along with how these funds may be used for operating expenses.
Fraud – Are You at Risk?: Learn how internal controls and segregation of duties not only help district fiscal operations, but minimize the risk of fraudulent activity.
Presenting Financial Information to Non-Financial Audiences: If you think school finance is a tough topic to tackle, consider how mind-boggling it is for the people who pay the taxes that fund your programs. This class, developed with help from members of the Kentucky Association of School Business Officials, offers ideas and calendar opportunities to spell out school budgets and taxes to the community.
Evaluating the Superintendent – Looking Back and Moving Forward: School boards have become familiar with the new Superintendent Professional Growth and Effectiveness System, now being implemented in all Kentucky school districts. Use this session to discuss successes and challenges of the new instrument and process, along with best practices to ensure the SPGES assists the board/superintendent team to become more effective leaders.
Ethics and the School Board Meeting: Effective school board leadership often involves making ethical decisions. This session looks at board member roles and responsibilities, as well as best practices before, during and after the school board meeting.
The format for each day of training will consist of three to five 60-minute workshops on the mandated topics. There will be a $40 fee for each session a participant attends to offset the cost of the trainers, travel expenses, materials and handouts. However, there is no fee to participate in the superintendent evaluation training thanks to a partnership with the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence and funding through the Gates Foundation.
Participants will have the option to attend all sessions or only the session(s) they need.
