E’town man at work on retirement systems’ board

Joe Brothers has hit the ground running after being named to the Board of Trustees of Kentucky Retirement Systems, the state pension agency.
Gov. Matt Bevin announced Brothers’ appointment Tuesday, and the next day, he was in Frankfort for meetings. He said he was impressed by his fellow board members.
Brothers, who is from Elizabethtown, previously served on the Elizabethtown Independent and state boards of education. In the new role, he’ll represent the Kentucky School Boards Association and serve until July 1, 2021.
“Our responsibility is to protect the interests of current retirees and make sure the money is invested wisely,” he said.
Brothers said he was excited when KSBA approached him about the opportunity because he’s been interested in the state’s retirement system for some time. He learned about its problems through the public service roles he’s held over the years.
“I didn’t feel like we were doing as well as a state,” he said.
Bevin told the General Assembly in February that the state owes $82 billion to KRS and the Kentucky Teachers’ Retirement System, which covers educators, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
Brothers said he wants to do right by the employees who rely on the retirement benefits.
“It’s an important undertaking,” he said.
