Commissioner Pruitt, UK President Capilouto headline KSBA Summer Leadership Institute lineup; multiple board training hour opportunitiesOnline registration is now live on the KSBA website for the association’s Summer Leadership Institute, July 7-8 at the Griffin Gate Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Lexington. Participants will be treated to an array of speakers, professional development clinics and invaluable networking time during the annual two-day event.

The agenda and online sign-up may be found here.

The learning opportunities actually begin ahead of the formal conference opening sessions with a Friday afternoon “bonus” series of clinics on the three state-mandated training topics for school board members – school finance, superintendent evaluations and board ethics. The series of back-to-back-to-back workshops begins at 1 p.m. and concludes at 4:30 p.m. You may register for the entire three-hour group, or register for a single class if that is the lone topic you need to meet the requirements.

The opening General Session begins 7 p.m. Friday with remarks by Kentucky Education Commissioner Stephen Pruitt, speaking on the topic “Leading during a time of change and transition.” Pruitt is currently leading the state Department of Education’s work to implement a new school and district accountability system and the reforms of Senate Bill 1 adopted by the 2017 General Assembly, as well as to prepare the rules for local boards to consider applications for the state’s first public charter schools sometime in early 2018.

Preceding the Friday night sessions, exhibitors that provide services to Kentucky school districts will have representatives on hand from 5:30–7:30 p.m. The exhibit booths also will be staffed on Saturday starting with the continental breakfast at 7:15 a.m. through noon.

Saturday’s agenda begins with a keynote address by University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto, the 12th president of the state’s largest higher education institution. Capilouto is expected to address K-12 and higher education collaboration and relationships from his unique perspective – he’s a former local school board member from Alabama.

Following the General Session, conference attendees may choose from 17 clinics in a series of three breakout sessions: 10–11:15 a.m.; 1:15–2:30 p.m.; and 2:45–4 p.m. There also will be a three-hour (1:15–4:15 p.m.) workshop option on research into strong board leadership in support of student achievement.

Among the 75-minute clinics offered Saturday morning and afternoon are:

• Inside the Office of Education Accountability (OEA)

• The very latest on Kentucky’s new accountability system

• Youth suicide and the “13 Reasons Why” web video series

• Managing a secure online identity

• Improving student behavior

• Changes in school law affecting Kentucky districts

• Mysteries of the MUNIS school finance system

• How to improve board work through the KSBA eMeeting service

• Being an effective education advocate
