When school shooting tragedies come to mind, Heath High School in McCracken County is first in the mind of most Kentuckians. But elsewhere, when guns in schools lead to death or injury, the incident often is labeled “Columbine-like.” Attendees at this year’s Kentucky Safe Schools and Communities Conference will get a first-person account of that 1999 calamity and what has taken place there – and in school safety across the U.S.

Frank DeAngelis lived through the Columbine deaths of 12 students, a teacher and then the suicides of the two student gunmen – and the aftermath and rebuilding prior to his retirement in 2014. DeAngelis will offer the keynote at this year’s school safety conference, sponsored June 15-16 at Louisville’s Marriott Louisville East by KSBA and the Kentucky Center for School Safety.

The conference opens that Monday at 9 a.m., with DeAngelis speaking Tuesday morning. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a packed lineup of school safety focused seminars, including, but not limited to, these subjects:

· Human trafficking and school-age youth

· Emergency signouts for children

· Teacher management of classroom behavior

· Restoration after a tornado

· Using technology in bus driver safety training

· Students, selfies and safety

· Arming adults on campus

· Preventing sexual abuse

· Bomb threat management

· The changing alternative school

· Student suicide – looking for the obvious and not-so-obvious signs

· Several seminars specifically about bullying and multiple related issues.

Conference registration is $215 per person and is live now here.
