District leaders will have an array of choices when it comes to picking topical seminars at this year’s KSBA Summer Leadership Institute July 10-11 at Lexington’s Marriott Griffin Gate Hotel and Conference Center
Just before the conference, KSBA will offer a “bonus back-to-back-to-back clinic” covering all three of the state-mandated board member annual training requirements: superintendent evaluations, school finance and leadership ethics. This three-hour session begins at 1 p.m. on Friday and wraps up with plenty of time for dinner on your own before the formal Institute program begins that evening at 7. Jan McInnis, also known as The Work Lady, mixes messages, finding the humor in change from her experience as an author, radio and TV staffer, comedian and corporate trainer.
After a free continental breakfast Saturday morning, the day of training beings with a general session on the “digital transition” for K-12 and the role of the school board in such initiatives as student laptops, new classroom teaching technology and other online and fingertip resources. Then, a series of three 75- minute seminars will open at 10:15 a.m. (followed by a lunch break – this is a separate ticketed meal), 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. In addition to clinics on the three mandatory board member training areas, other session topics include:
· Year one of Kentucky’s nontraditional (snow days) learning project
· Improving kindergarten readiness
· Fostering innovation
· Kentucky’s new juvenile justice law
· Early childhood learning
· Energy management
· The recallable facility nickel tax
· Next steps after hiring a superintendent
· Facility design and construction and the board
· Paperless board meetings
· A deeper look at board decisions about technology purchases
· Balancing governmental roles at the board level
All sessions qualify for EILA credit for administrators as well as KSBA Academy of Studies hours for board members.
Registration is $210 per person (plus $15 for all participating in the Saturday lunch on the grounds). A block of reduced-rate rooms at the Griffin Gate Hotel is available the nights of July 9, 10 and 11, with a reservation deadline of June 25.
