Deadline to nominate for KSBA PEAK Award approaching; forms and letters of endorsement due by Oct. 1

The second nomination cycle of 2015 for KSBA’s prestigious PEAK (Public Education Achieves in Kentucky) Award is rapidly coming to a close. Nominations to recognize district and/or school programs aimed at enhancing student achievement must be received by Oct. 1.

The PEAK Award was created in 1997 by the association’s board of directors to acknowledge exemplary local programs designed to improve student learning. The 42nd PEAK Award-winning program will be recognized in the following ways:

      · Presentation of the unique PEAK Award statue at local ceremonies attending by a delegation of the KSBA board of directors and association staff.

· A feature article in the Kentucky School Advocate magazine.

· Selection for presentation in a clinic during the 2016 KSBA annual conference next February.

Nominations may be submitted only by the local board of education and the district administration. Only programs specifically designed to improve the academic achievement of students will be considered for the PEAK Award. Programs already must be in operation; concepts will not be eligible until implemented. Nominated programs should be noncommercial, locally created and innovative.

Nominations will consist of the following documents:

      · Program overview from the district with information on the following points:

Objectives of the program.

Scope of the program (one school, multiple schools, districtwide, number of students involved).

Costs and funding source for the program.

Degree of school board support.

An assessment of the progress of the program towards those stated goals. Judges consistently             weigh proven program results over anecdotal evidence.

This overview is limited to three pages and will account for 60 percent of the scoring.

      · Two letters of endorsement, one from each of the following individuals and/or entities:

One from a teacher (or teachers) involved in the program. This letter should detail the instructor's impressions on the impact and potential future impact of the program.

One from one or more students or parent(s) of students benefiting from the program. This letter should detail the program's impact on the student's academic performance.

Each of these two letters, which must contain the writer's signature, will be judged as part of the entry with points scored for letters demonstrating both a knowledge of the goals and of the progress to date made by the program. Each letter may be no more than two pages. This portion of the entry will account for 40 percent of the scoring (20 percent for each letter).

No other materials submitted with an entry will be considered as part of the nomination nor will they be passed along for consideration by the panel of judges.

Districts that have previously received the PEAK Award must wait 10 years before being eligible for consideration for another program/project.

All submission information is available on the KSBA website here http://www.ksba.org/PEAK.aspx.
