Room and conference reservations are coming in for board members, superintendents and others coming to Lexington’s Marriott Griffin Gate Hotel July for this year’s KSBA Summer Leadership Institute.

With the better part of three weeks to go, the preregistration passed the 100 mark last week and is growing daily. For those wishing to use the KSBA event discount for lodging of $139 plus taxes, please remember that rate guarantee expires this Thursday, June 25. Contact the hotel for those reservations at 1-859-231-5100.

Conference registration is live online here.

As noted previously, before the Summer Leadership Institute kicks off Friday night, KSBA will offer a bonus “back-to-back-to-back” mini clinic covering all three of the state-mandated board member annual training requirements: superintendent evaluations, school finance and leadership ethics. This three-hour session begins at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Friday evening’s keynote speaker at 7 is Jan McInnis, aka The Work Lady, who specializes in mixing messages with humor based on her career as a broadcaster, comedian and corporate trainer.

After a continental breakfast Saturday morning, the second general session will be on the role of the school board in such initiatives as student laptops, new classroom teaching technology and other online and electronic resources. Then, a series of three 75- minute seminars will open at 10:15 a.m. (followed by a lunch break – this is a separate ticketed meal), 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. In addition to clinics on the three mandatory board member training areas, other session topics include:

· The latest on Kentucky’s nontraditional (snow days) learning project and expansion in 2015-16

· Improving kindergarten readiness

· Kentucky’s new juvenile justice law

· Early childhood learning

· Energy management

· The recallable facility nickel tax

· Next steps after hiring a superintendent

· Facility design and construction and the board

· Paperless board meetings

· A deeper look at board decisions about technology purchases

· Balancing governmental roles at the board level

Registration is $210 per person (plus $15 for the Saturday lunch on the grounds). All sessions qualify for EILA credit for administrators as well as KSBA Academy of Studies hours for board members.
