Registration now open online for KSBA’s 2016 Legislative Preview Conference, July 10 in Lexington; event separate from Summer Leadership Institute

School leaders planning to attend next month’s KSBA Summer Leadership Institute – and those who want to get a jump start on the top issues for the 2016 General Assembly – can combine both by coming to the Marriott Griffin Gate in Lexington on Friday morning, July 10.

The KSBA 2016 Legislative Preview Conference will run from 9 a.m. to noon ET, separate from the Summer Leadership Institute that runs Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. (See the next Boardcast item for an update on the SLI.)

KSBA Governmental Relations Director Hope McLaughlin has created a three-segment program on key issues leading into the 2016 legislative session. And – surprise – all of them deal with funding.

At 9 a.m., Beau Barnes, deputy executive general counsel and secretary of operations for the Kentucky Teachers’ Retirement System will give an update on activities to achieve legislative action on the state’s multibillion-dollar KTRS pension underfunding.

At 10 a.m., Michael Goetz of the financial planning consulting firm Picus, Odden & Associates will give an overview of the Council for Better Education’s Adequacy in Excellence in Kentucky report and what it could mean for the future of education funding in Kentucky.

And at 11 a.m., a panel of legislators will discuss the process of writing the state budget for the next two fiscal years, including a deeper look at the priorities and challenges facing budget writers as January’s start of the session approaches.

The $40 fee covers all costs for participants including a light breakfast for attendees. Note: Cancellations after July 1 carry a $20 fee to cover event costs, but substitute participants are welcome.
