Barren County Schools to auction off surplus property
Three vehicles to be among goods for sale

A wealth of old property Barren County Schools has surplused, including a riding lawnmower, three vehicles, commercial copiers, TVs and an electrical generator will be for sale this Saturday.
According to Assistant Superintendent Mark Wallace, the auction will be at Hiseville Elementary School at 10 a.m.
Wallace said the district holds a sale like this when it's time to clear out the district's storage space.
"Every year or two, we have a number of excess items we no longer use that we need to sell," he said. "After a while we kind of run out of storage space."
This year, Wallace expects the most enticing items for sale to be the three vehicles: a 1996 Ford Windstar van, a 1996 Ford F-150 and a 2002 Chevrolet Van.
Chip Jenkins, the district's director of transportation, said Barren County Schools has gotten plenty of use out of all three vehicles, which were surplused last month after it was determined that they were no longer worth the cost of the repairs they'd need.
"That one van is a '96 model. It's just worn out," he said. "The transmission's shot."
The engine of the truck still works well but the truck itself is badly rusted, especially the undercarriage, which could give out if any more weight is applied to it, he said.
In his experience, these cars are typically purchased for their parts, many of which are still in good working order, Jenkins said.
While there are currently no plans for what to do with the revenue from the sale, Wallace said the district will most likely put much of the money toward replacements for the three vehicles and the mower.
"Hopefully we'll be able to sell these things and put those funds toward those purchases," he said. "We've utilized them for a good number of years and getting the best out of them and it's time to move on."
Typically, these surplus sales, when they're held, draw fairly large crowds, Wallace said, adding that many of the people who show up either buy and sell old materials for a living or are interested in purchasing a particular piece of furniture, like a table or a filing cabinet, for their home.
