Reminder: Filing deadline for candidates in November school board elections is next Tuesday, Aug. 9; online resource available

Americans will be voting for more than president of the United States on Nov. 8. Among the many local and statewide elections on the ballot will be several hundred seats for all 173 Kentucky local school boards.

The filing deadline for eligible citizens who want to run for a local board of education seat is this coming Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 4 p.m. local time. Candidates who must file are incumbent school board members whose full terms are expiring and who want to seek another term, those appointed by the commissioner of education who must run to complete an unexpired term and any non-incumbents seeking the office for either a full or unexpired term.

Under Kentucky law, it is the responsibility of incumbent board members to ascertain with the county board of elections their status as to filing to run for another term in office. Virtually every year, some incumbent board members fail to file because of confusion regarding their status – frequently involving members who have been appointed to fill an unexpired term.

KSBA’s Legal Services division again has produced an extensive online package of resources that includes information about seeking election as a school board; affidavit for school board candidacy; and information about what is involved in school board service, including points about potential conflicts of interest.
