Kentucky joins other states to mark January as School Board Recognition Month; KSBA partners with districts for observations

For the 21st consecutive year, Kentuckians are saying "Thank you" to the 867 men and women serving their communities as members of the state's 173 local boards of education.

Since 1995, Kentucky and many other states have marked the month of January as School Board Recognition Month.

“Serving as a member of a local school board is one of the best opportunities to positively impact the district’s children and youth,” said KSBA Executive Director Mike Armstrong.

“School board members continuously work ‘in the present while likewise looking forward and planning for continuous student achievement and outcomes. Classrooms, school buildings, and school districts are very different today as traditional education paths have now been morphed alongside new and exciting career readiness pathways. School board members are at the vanguard of this effort. Their time, energy and dedication to this work is an essential element in making this Commonwealth a leader in meeting the needs of all of our students,” said Armstrong, a former Lawrence County superintendent and longtime educator.

As it traditionally has done, KSBA has collaborated with the school systems on sample materials to use in local celebrations of their board members’ service. Those items have been shared with superintendents, district communications personnel and members of the Kentucky Organization of Superintendents’ Administrative Assistants and may be found on our website here.

Thank you to all Kentucky school board members for your leadership and service to the children and taxpayers of the Commonwealth.
