Board members reminded to be sure of annual total hours, specific topic training requirements; KSBA Winter Symposium registration live online now

With the last major training event of the year just 32 days away, Kentucky school board members need to be sure they have met – or are scheduled to meet – their annual statutory credit hour requirements before the 2015 calendar runs out.

Under Kentucky law, local board of education members are required to have a minimum number of approved training hours each year. For board members seated as of Dec. 31, 2014, the requirement is 12 hours of training for board members with zero to three years of experience, eight hours of training for members with four to seven years of experience, and four hours of training for school board members with eight or more years of experience.

Additionally, board members must annually receive specific classes in school finance, superintendent evaluations and ethics.

It is the responsibility of each school board member to meet the training requirements and ensure that they are recorded with KSBA, designated by the Kentucky Board of Education as the official record-keeping agency.

Any board member with questions about their hours reported to KSBA may contact Tammie Conatser [email protected] or call 800-372-2962.

At the KSBA Winter Symposium, Dec. 4-5 in Louisville, board members and others may earn up to 8 ½ hours of approved training, including those specific required courses. Classes taken at the conference also apply to achieving levels of training through KSBA’s Academy of Studies.
