Programmed for success
Of the state’s 1,230-plus schools, just 60 or so managed to achieve a distinguished rating in one or more program review areas for 2013, while the vast majority ranked in the “needs improvement” category. What did some of these schools do that others didn’t?

Money talks
Compensating rate, 4 percent increase, draft budget, working budget, nickel taxes and cuts. Lots of cuts. A session on how boards can better communicate about financial issues like these was one of the new offerings at this year’s KSBA Winter Symposium.

Creating Next-Generation Leaders
A sometimes-controversial education historian, author and professor will stir things up at the 2014 KSBA Annual Conference, along with a returning motivational speaker and a host of clinics covering everything from new ethics training and school safety to finance, finance, and more finance.

Togetherness
School Board Recognition Month: Members of the Burgin Independent Board, who have been together for more than a decade, reflect on the bonds they’ve formed and the good, and not-so-good, times that helped forge them.

Crunch time for 2014 General Assembly
There has been no escaping the message during the months leading up to the opening of the 2014 General Assembly: Restore education funding levels. House and Senate education committee chairmen assess those prospects, and other education issues likely to arise.
