Four director-at-large seats up for election to KSBA Board of Directors; nominations must be received by Nov. 14

Four director-at-large seats up for election to KSBA Board of Directors; nominations must be received by Nov. 14

November elections will fill several hundred seats on Kentucky’s local boards of education. And shortly after the Nov. 4 election, preparations for another election will begin as four seats on the KSBA Board of Directors are filled through the nomination process outlined in the association’s bylaws.

This year, four director-at-large posts, covering three year terms, are up for selection. Two incumbent directors-at-large, Gene Peel of Jessamine County and Linda Duncan of Jefferson County, have completed their eligibility. Two other incumbents, Jeff Eaton of Allen County and Tina Hasty of Rockcastle County, are eligible to seek a second term.

The KSBA Board of Directors consists of 12 directors-at-large, 12 regional chairpersons (six seats to be filled during this year’s Fall Regional Meetings), and the three officers – president, president elect and immediate past president.

A call for self-nominations for the director-at-large seats on the KSBA board will be mailed to all local school board members next week. The form also will be posted on the association’s website www.ksba.org; click on the about icon atop the home page.

The completed nomination form must be returned to KSBA by Nov. 14.

Some factors for local board members to consider include:

  • A candidate for the office of director-at-large must be a sitting local board member and eligible to serve in the director’s post when placing her or his name in nomination.
  • No local board member is eligible for election to the KSBA board for a term that would coincide with another member of that same school board already serving on the association board.
    · Selected candidates will be expected to present a brief speech at the association’s next annual conference.

The KSBA Board of Directors sets association policy, legislative positions and annual budgets, and works closely with the association’s professional staff on issues important to Kentucky’s public elementary and secondary education system. The board meets at least quarterly with members participating between meetings on various board committees (usually meeting via conference call).

A nominee selection committee has been appointed by President Durward Narramore Jr. of Jenkins Independent.  Under the association bylaws, that panel will review the candidates and present a slate of nominees for ratification during the KSBA annual conference business session Feb. 28, 2015 in Louisville.
