KSBA’s board of directors gathered March 18-19 in Berea for its annual retreat, work session and regular quarterly meeting. The weekend’s proceedings were hosted at the Historic Boone Tavern of Berea College.

As part of Friday’s work session and retreat, members discussed results of the board’s recent self-evaluation, identifying the roles, responsibilities and expectations of their service to the association, as well as possible areas of improvement.

The weekend also served as orientation for two of KSBA’s newest board members, Chris Cook of Crittenden County and Blair Skidmore of Barbourville Ind. The pair took part in their first board meeting after being ratified at the association’s February annual business meeting. Board members reviewed the history of KSBA, its structure and a breakdown of unit services.

KSBA President Davonna Page of Russellville Ind. unveiled her 2022 board committee assignments. Currently, board members sit on at least one committee including Governance, Performance Oversight/Monitoring, External/Member Relations, and Planning and Program Development.

Saturday’s regular board meeting featured a packed agenda, highlighted by a review of association finances and an in-depth review of several key bills in the General Assembly. A recap of the 2022 Annual Conference was presented and the board walked through drafts of new KSBA member resources to help boards navigate difficult conversations on educational equity and critical race theory (CRT). KSBA Executive Director Kerri Schelling provided a quarterly strategic plan update, and the board approved meeting dates for the 2023 fiscal year.
