Winter Symposium offers newly elected members opportunity for training

Staff report

KSBA returns to the Louisville Marriott Downtown Dec. 9-10 for its 2022 Winter Symposium, the association’s final in-person training opportunity of the year where board members can potentially earn more than 10 hours of credit towards their annual state-mandated training requirements.

Symposiums that coincide with election years provide a unique opportunity for newly elected members to begin earning state-mandated board training hours before they are even sworn into office. The “New Board Member Express,” KSBA’s six-session training track for the association’s newest members, will dive deep on several critical topics such as board policy, open meetings best practices, legal and ethical considerations and fiscal responsibilities. Following the Nov. 8 election, districts are encouraged to register their board members-elect for Winter Symposium so their full board teams can hit the ground running come January.

For the symposium’s Friday luncheon, KSBA welcomes two familiar faces who will present on the importance of building a cohesive board team. Kentucky Association of School Superintendents Executive Director Jim Flynn will be joined on stage by Greg Coker, a speaker, author and former Simpson County school board member, to explore questions every board team should be asking. Together, Flynn and Coker will flex more than 60 combined years of experience to share best practices for school boards aspiring to meet and exceed educational needs of students in a post pandemic world.

Between sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to network with each other and 29 exhibitors from throughout Kentucky and beyond in our sold-out trade show area. To cap off the first day of Winter Symposium, celebrate with KSBA and fellow conference-goers for food and refreshments at Friday evening’s networking reception.

KSBA has reserved a limited block of hotel rooms at the Louisville Marriott Downtown for the nights of Dec. 8 through Dec. 10. Attendees can reserve rooms at a special rate of $179 (plus tax) per night until Nov. 15 or until the room block sells out, whichever happens first. A unique hotel link with access to the special rate will be included in your symposium registration confirmation email. Districts are encouraged to register as soon as possible to take advantage of the special rate.

Winter Symposium registration packets have been mailed to all school board teams, and easy online registration is available. For more info, including full conference schedule and online registration, visit ksba.org/KSBAWinterSymposium.aspx.
