Before the Summer Leadership Institute kicked off on July 19, the Kentucky Department of Education’s Local School Board Member Advisory Council met to hear from new Education Commissioner Robbie Fletcher and Director of Innovation Sarah Snipes.

The council, which includes 13 school board members – seven from each of the state’s judicial districts and six at-large – is charged with advising KDE on how state decisions and initiatives affect local school boards and districts.

Fletcher, who began his new role July 1, introduced himself to the members and said he plans to focus on creating a better system to measure student performance in the Commonwealth.

“So next steps for us is there’s huge focus on accountability. And also consistency,” he said. “That longevity, consistency when it comes to accountability is so important.”

The council also heard a legislative update from KDE’s Director of Governmental Relations Brian Perry and discussed solutions to bullying in schools with Blake Konny, program consultant for KDE’s Safe and Support Schools division.

The meeting, led by Chair David Webster, Simpson County Schools board member, was facilitated by Snipes. Snipes distributed copies of KDE’s new Kentucky Innovation Guide, available on KDE’s website, designed to help districts create and use Portraits of a Learner.

The next Local School Board Member Advisory Council meeting will be held in conjunction with KSBA’s Winter Symposium Dec. 6-7 in Louisville.
