Staff report
KSBA is pleased to announce the opening of nominations for the association’s inaugural School Board Member of the Year (BMOY) Award. Established by school board members for school board members, the 2022 BMOY Award is designed to honor the exemplary service of association members and to celebrate the critical roles school boards play in the advancement of public education in Kentucky.
Due to the pandemic, KSBA paused its major awards in 2020-21 and took the opportunity to reassess the means by which the association recognizes excellence in board service.
“An advisory committee was assembled, comprised of current and former KSBA presidents, major award winners and leadership staff,” said KSBA Executive Director Kerri Schelling. “This group carefully devised the award criteria, discussed the qualities of would-be honorees and even reviewed how other state school board associations honor their members.”
Recipients of the new award will be those who have made significant contributions to public education through board service and who personify the following qualities:
• Exemplifies leadership best practices.
• Passionately advocates for the needs of his/her district and public education.
• Demonstrates the highest ethical standards and celebrates the value of public service.
• Actively engages in KSBA training and events.
• Exhibits a keen understanding of district governance and operations.
Fellow school board members, superintendents, administrators and community members are encouraged to put forth names for this honor.
More information, award criteria and the nomination form are available at
on our website. Nominations must be submitted online no later than 5 p.m. (ET) Dec. 10. The 2022 Board Member of the Year will be honored on stage in Louisville at KSBA’s 2022 Annual Conference in February.
