Annual conference banners needed
KSBA’s Board of Directors has chosen the theme for the 84th Annual Conference to be held Feb. 21–23 at the Galt House in Louisville. “Education in Focus: Vision 2020” (see logo at right) will serve as inspiration for this year’s gathering, from session topics to student banner designs. The theme speaks to the importance of reprioritizing public education at a time where Kentucky’s system of common schools is vulnerable. Annual Conference will celebrate where we have been and where we aspire to be in the years ahead.

District involvement is at the heart of what makes KSBA events successful and, to that end, each school district in invited to design one of the banners that will line the halls of the conference. KSBA asks districts to create the banner as part of a student learning activity. The 32 x 63 ½ inch vertical banners must identify the school district and depict the conference theme. Banners must be received to KSBA by Feb. 20 and will be returned to the district by the end of March.

School board member appointed to KCSS
Jessamine County board member Denise Bailey Adams, a retired educator, has been appointed as KSBA’s representative to the board of the Kentucky Center for School Safety. Her term will run through March 11, 2023.

The Kentucky Center for School Safety was established in 1998 by the General Assembly to create safe, secure learning environments in Kentucky schools. The center analyzes data, researches and disseminates information about successful school safety programs, best practices and new programs.

The center’s board was reconstituted in Senate Bill 1, the school safety bill, to include 15 members who are equally representative of education organizations, law enforcement, child welfare groups and physical and mental health experts.

Sargent elected region chair
James Sargent, who has served nine years on the Anderson County board, was selected as the Central Kentucky Regional chairman for KSBA’s Board of Directors at the region’s fall meeting. Sargent, who previously served as regional chairman, won the KSBA Kids First Advocacy Award in 2012. He is a member of the United Way and serves on the board of directors for CASA of the Bluegrass. Sargent received an associate degree from Bluegrass Community and Technical College and is a service technician for AT&T.
