Building change
For the second time in five years, the state education department is launching a new system for assessing and classifying the condition of school buildings. The unique feature this time is an app that can upload building data to a central system designed to score buildings in a uniform way. Find out what users think.

Budgets, safety and more
It’s a little “back by popular demand” and a little “first-time ever.” School board members attending this year’s Summer Leadership Institute will get more of the safe schools training they’ve requested, along with the early bird bonus sessions. And there’s a clinic KSBA has never offered before on deciphering the state budget.

Real preparation for real world
Russellville Ready is more than catchy alliteration. The program at Russellville Independent High School is a detailed pathway for seniors to ensure they are prepared, can demonstrate what they know and prove they can graduate ready for their next steps in the real world.

Panel presentations
Russellville seniors don’t just show their teachers and administrators what they know: They have to prove themselves to a panel that includes community and business representatives.

Job sharing
The responsibilities of school boards and school councils were highlighted during the inaugural Parent Leadership Summit this spring, sponsored by the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence. Members of each group shared their insights and experiences with attendees during a panel discussion.

Lights out in Morgan County
Morgan County’s East Valley Elementary won this year’s Battle of the School Buildings energy-saving competition, but that’s not all. Two other schools in the district placed in the top five of the contest. East Valley’s secret? Turning the building “upside down,” in its energy efficiency quest.

Representatives from the Kentucky School Boards Association presented Newport Independent Schools with the 2018 Spring PEAK Award in early May during a ceremony at the school.

Russellville Independent completed the first year of its Russellville Ready pilot program with panel review presentations from about 20 seniors, including Ashlee Gilbert. The year-long program challenges all seniors to demonstrate that they have acquired 12 attributes under the areas of college, career and citizenship. Students complete several learning experiences throughout the year, including taking a strengths finder assessment and participating in three Deep Dive Days. In early May, seniors proved why they were ready to graduate with the authentic panel review presentations.
