Training and Events

Whether you are a new or long-time board member, there are new leadership skills, new laws and new approaches to education to explore. KSBA offers many training opportunities and events that will help you better serve your community and schools. Online training, specialized training and workshops at KSBA meetings give you the opportunity to interact with, and learn from, colleagues from across the state as you meet your mandated training requirements.
 
Board Training Requirements
The minimum number of training hours that a board member must earn each year is defined in KRS 160.180(5) and is based on the length of their board experience. The statute also grants authority to the Kentucky Board of Education to identify the criteria for fulfilling this requirement. A synopsis of 702 KAR 1:115, the accompanying regulation to this statute, is as follows:
 
Annual minimum hours 
For board members in office as of Dec. 31, 2014
  • 12 hours for those with up to three years of experience
  • Eight hours for  those with four to seven years of experience
  • Four hours for those with eight or more years of experience 

For board members beginning service on or after Jan. 1, 2015

  • 12 hours for those with up to seven years of experience
  • Eight hours for those with eight or more years of experience 

Mandated topics annually

For board members with up to three years of experience, training must include

  • Three hours of school finance
  • One hour of ethics training
  • One hour of superintendent evaluation training 

For board members with four to seven years of experience, training must include

  • Two hours of school finance
  • One hour of ethics training
  • One hour of superintendent evaluation training 

 For board members with eight or more years of experience, training must include

  • One hour of school finance
  • One hour of ethics training
  • One hour of superintendent evaluation training, every other year

Outside Training Providers

Training requirements may also be met by participating in local board/superintendent team training provided by KSBA or through other providers that have been approved by the Kentucky Department of Education as required by statute. KSBA has developed an Outside Training Provider Application to assist such providers in obtaining this approval.
