Becoming a school board member for your district comes with a heavy commitment to your fellow board members, superintendent, school staff and administrators, students, parents and other community constituents. This session is specifically designed as part of KSBA’s New Board Member Express and is intended for board members in their first year of service.  Whether you have served in other leadership positions before or not, leading with a clear sense of what your ethical boundaries are is extremely important in your new role. In this session, you will explore the school board member code of ethical conduct, discuss examples of poor ethical practices that made the news, and explore how individual districts address ethics in their local policies.

This session is specifically designed as part of KSBA’s New Board Member Express and is intended for board members in their first year of service. This session will explore the role of the board in the planning and execution of the evaluation, the objectives and timeline of the process, and tips for holding each other accountable.

This session is designed to provide new board members with an overview of the skills and knowledge necessary to become effective members of their district board/superintendent team.

Noon – 1p.m. (ET)
Getting started in school board service can be a very daunting experience, especially if you have never been to any type of formal meeting in the past. As part of KSBA’s New Board Member Express, this session will give members the confidence to enter a school board meeting with some general knowledge of what will happen and why they are there. Members will learn the lingo, discuss the types of board meetings, interpreting the agenda and the board minutes, and learning the rules and etiquette required to make them an effective board member.
One of the most important responsibilities of a school board member is to be a steward of public funds. As a new board member, you may not be familiar with sources of revenue for education, tax levies and bond issues, budgeting, financial reports, and oversight. As part of KSBA’s New Board Member Express, this session will assist new members in gaining knowledge and learning what it takes to deliver the kind of education the community wants and expects.
