First-graders from several school districts enjoyed a mock race at the Kentucky Horse Park April 10 that recreated the 1938 Pimlico Race Course matchup between War Admiral and Seabiscuit.
The “race” was part of the Horse Park’s Literacy Program. Students prepared for the fun by reading a book about Seabiscuit in advance. To date, the program has distributed more than 22,000 books to first- and fourth-grade students in 11 counties. One of its goals is to expand the program to other grades to both support a love of reading and a love of horses.
