Please share why you decided to run for your local school board.
I had been involved in education as a parent volunteer, PTA officer and SBDM council member for13 years. When I was asked by a long time board member, who did not intend to seek the office again, to run in her place I felt it was the next step for me to have a impact on the education of our students. Honestly, I felt it an honor that she would ask me to run for the board seat in her place.
What is your favorite thing about serving on your local board?
Every month, prior to Covid, our central office staff and board members who want to participate visit one of our schools during lunch. At our elementary schools we sit with the students and eat lunch with them. It is very enlightening to talk with them and hear what they have to say. At our middle and high schools, we serve hot chocolate. Students appreciate the gesture and are always eager to talk with you.
What activities do you enjoy doing outside your board work?
I am a crafter in many ways. I do appliqué, stenciling, repurpose items, refinish furniture and even make simple pieces of furniture. I enjoy going to barn sales and junk stores looking for treasures. I like to work with my hands and stay busy.
Name someone in your life you admire, or who inspired or helped you along the way.
That would have to be my Mom. As I was growing up she expected me to accept responsibility for my decisions and actions. When I asked if I could do something she very seldom said "no" but would say " I would rather you not do that". I knew by this she was putting the responsibility of my choice on me and I would face the consequences. She also taught me by example to care for others, to serve others and give back to my community.
Please share something about yourself that most people may not know.
I have always been a volunteer. Before my children were born, before school involvement, I volunteered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association doing fundraising, community awareness and working their yearly telethon.
