Kristy Carey, Director-at-large

Kristy Carey is a Harrison County school board member

Please share why you decided to run for your local school board.
When our children started their educational journey, I began volunteering and became increasingly involved, enjoying the growth and development of all of the students but also seeing so many needs. Sadly, not every child has a parent/guardian that is able to be a voice for them. When a position became available I wanted to become involved on a broader scale representing my district and the entire system as an advocate for public  education.

What is your favorite thing about serving on your local board?
There are many favorites but seeing all students excel at their highest level makes me so proud, knowing we are opening doors for their future. Currently, we are in the process of a major construction project - the first new school in our district since 1964. Our students and community are so deserving, and this will bring about many new opportunities preparing each student that walks across the stage at graduation to be "Life Ready."

What activities do you enjoy doing outside your board work?
We love visiting our two adult children that live out of state and our family has a new addition, a granddaughter born in January. We enjoy entertaining family and friends. I am a huge UK Wildcat fan and enjoy attending games. Also, reading has been a longtime enjoyment.

Name someone in your life you admire, or who inspired or helped you along the way.
My mother, Mrs. King, was an amazing woman and continues to inspire me long after her passing. She married her childhood sweetheart and they had three children. She enrolled in college the same semester as her oldest child and began teaching social studies shortly after graduation. After my father's passing, she traveled the world solo during summer breaks and brought the world to life with her students. I still have her former students tell me about the impact she had on them - to embrace education because it could change their world as it had hers.

Name a book/magazine/website/publication/etc. that you would recommend to other school board members.
"The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People"

Please share something about yourself that most people may not know.
My favorite vacation ever was a week at Colorado Dude Ranch.
