Shawn Smee, Regional Director

Shawn Smee is a Murray Independent school board member

Please share why you decided to run for your local school board.
Growing up the son of an educator and administrator, being around school and school activities have always been part of who I am. On a local level with four children in the system, I felt it was good way to get involved and hopefully make a difference for the children, faculty and staff.

What is your favorite thing about serving on your local board?
The opportunity to volunteer in all of the buildings and interact with a wide variety of staff and students. In the last year, I have been proud to serve as an advocate for all the decisions and processes MISD has has to implement.

What activities do you enjoy doing outside your board work?
Working on a college campus, many of the activities including attending events that support our students. Our family enjoys going to sporting events, special lectures and theatre performances. Additionally, traveling is a big part of who I am.

Name someone in your life you admire, or who inspired or helped you along the way.
Mrs. Frances Dooley - High School history teacher.  She was a teacher but so, so much more. She taught with passion and made you want to show up for class and ask questions. She not only lectured, she read books to us and took us to plays--anything to engage each and every one of us. I stay in touch with her as do so many of my classmates. What a gem!

Name a book/magazine/website/publication/etc. that you would recommend to other school board members
Books written by Jon Acuff and Bob Goff

Please share something about yourself that most people may not know.
I have traveled to over 40 countries.
