Tom Haggard, Director-at-large

Tom Haggard is a Covington Independent school board member

Please share why you decided to run for your local school board.
I decided to run for my local school board because I love our Covington public schools. I've been a student, employee, coach, volunteer and now school board member. Covington schools gave me so much to help me become the person I am today, so I wanted to give back in this leadership role.

What is your favorite thing about serving on your local board?
My favorite thing about serving on my local school board is seeing our students succeed. Whether that is through student performances, athletic events or graduation day – seeing our students achieve their goals is the best part of being a school board member.

What activities do you enjoy doing outside your board work?
I enjoy serving on other community boards and committees, hanging out with my golden retriever Lady Bird or attending Xavier University basketball games.

Name someone in your life you admire, or who inspired or helped you along the way.
My mom is the person who inspired me the most along my journey. She always taught me to "fill my mind with truth, my hear with love and my life with service" and I've always used that lesson to guide me along the way. She was also a fierce advocate for public education and made sure that my brother and I had the best educational opportunities available and inspired us to be life-long learners.

Name a book/magazine/website/publication/etc. that you would recommend to other school board members.
"How Children Succeed" by Paul Tough

Please share something about yourself that most people may not know.
I have met two Presidents of the United States!
