School board members, superintendents, other education leaders head to Lexington in just two weeks for KSBA summer conference

The first 100 registrations are in the books as school leaders make their plans for next month’s KSBA Summer Leadership Institute, July 8-9 at Lexington’s Marriott Griffin Gate.

While plenty of time remains to register online for the event, the deadline to take advantage of the special lodging rates is this Thursday, June 23. Contact the hotel directly at (877) 901-6632 to secure lodging for Thursday and/or Friday nights.

Registration for the second of KSBA’s three major conferences of the year is here.

Among the highlights included in this year’s Summer Leadership Institute agenda are:

Ø A focus on local and state decision making under the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act law, led by one of the National School Boards Association’s key advocates.

Ø An analysis of Kentucky legislative activities for K-12 schools, both from the 2016 session and looking ahead to anticipated bills when the General Assembly convenes in January.

Ø A special Friday afternoon set of “bonus sessions” that provide time to earn all three of the state mandated training topics for board members – finance, ethics and superintendent evaluations. (All three subjects also will be covered Saturday in individual sessions.)

Saturday morning and afternoon clinics will cover a variety of critical issues for school leaders, including:

ü An update on KDE’s progress to craft a new school accountability system.

ü Suicide prevention activities as a part of a school safety program.

ü Kentucky’s new bullying definition (enacted by the 2016 legislature).

ü Questions about arming teachers or other school personnel.

ü The state minority superintendent internship program.

   ü KSBA’s school board self-evaluation project.

ü Data-driven decision making on school facilities.

ü Using technology (KSBA’s eMeeting service) to modernize the board meeting.
