Rep. James Tipton

KSBA’s board of directors gathered for its quarterly work session and meeting Sept. 22 and 23 in Frankfort.

The work session kicked off with a conversation with Rep. James Tipton, R-Taylorsville, chair of the House Education Committee. Board members had the opportunity to share their concerns and ask questions of the central Kentucky legislator. Tipton discussed education issues expected to come up during the next legislative session including the SEEK funding formula, enrollment trends, teacher shortages and the implementation of the Read to Succeed Act and LETRS training. Tipton also said he expected the General Assembly to consider new approaches to numeracy education.

During the business meeting, the board heard committee reports and an update on the progress of KSBA’s strategic plan, which KSBA President Karen Byrd noted was the most collaborative plan to date. Directors also reviewed and approved the association’s legislative priorities for the 2024 Regular Session, to be released this fall to school board members.

Other items included approval of quarterly financial statements and a service spotlight on KSBA’s longstanding unemployment claims processing service.

The next KSBA’s board of directors meeting is scheduled for Dec. 9 in Louisville, in conjunction with the 2023 Winter Symposium.

This year’s symposium will also serve an important function in the association’s transition of leadership. Members of a Selection Committee, appointed by KSBA’s president, will interview applicants for four director-at-large seats during the conference. School board members who wish to be considered for one of the open board seats may review board service expectations and association bylaws before completing an online application at ksba.org/BoardofDirectors.aspx.

Those put forward by the Selection Committee to serve a three-year term on the board will first be subject to ratification at the 2024 Annual Conference in March.
