There’s no sleeping in on Saturday for students who are failing a class at North Marshall (County) Middle School. Instead, they’re at school at 7 a.m. for tutoring, makeup work and other extra help to bring up their grade. The early hour works as an extra incentive to get them to buckle down.

College and career readiness has been a major focus of Kentucky schools since Senate Bill 1 reconstituted Kentucky education reform. A look at the drive after five years:
These Jessamine County Schools coaches put students back in the game of academics. The district has reduced discipline referrals with behavior coaches who don’t just monitor the actions of students with behavior issues – they work with them on how to change.

First-time candidates who run for a local school board seat this year will not have the same training requirements as those already on the board, if they are elected. The 2014 General Assembly tweaked the training hours mandate and the changes kick in Jan. 1.

School board members who attend this year’s Summer Leadership Institute will be able to take advantage of a training trifecta: a session that combines all three of the new training requirements. This year’s speakers will give board members tips about communication and dispelling the myths of “failing” public schools.

From the magazine

North Marshall (County) Middle School teacher Kevin McClard helps a student during Saturday School, assigned to students who are failing a class. It’s one of a battery of safety nets the school has set up. Teachers and school administrators volunteer their time for the Saturday session, including Jeff Jones at the desk at front.
